Dear Parents,
Only twenty four shopping days until Christmas! Now that I have your attention, welcome to the December Newsletter. It is hard for me to believe that at Christmas break one half of this year is already over. To coin a phrase, my how time flies. December seems like a very short month for school. It is very exciting with many special activities going on. The children practice and perform in the Christmas program, attend Advent penance services, participate in the school spelling bee, and enjoy the class Christmas party. With all of this excitement it is sometimes hard to remember the importance of school work during this hectic month. Please help out by checking to see if your child is completing their homework and preparing for tests during the month. Remember to do those twenty minutes of nightly reading and practice rocket math on school nights.

I want to say a special thank you to all our generous parents. I am sure you heard that the second grade did not win the war on hunger. We did however bring in tons and tons of cans, boxes and dollars. Just think of the many families that will benefit from the food Resurrection School donates to the food pantry! You are awesome parents!

Subject Highlights for the month of December:

Reading- Skills reviewed during the month include practice of the following sounds- long e, long u, ch, sh, th and wh. We will practice cause and effect, synonyms, action verb, past tense verbs, verb agreement, abbreviations, syllables, and letter punctuation. We will also review the prefixes and suffixes-ful, less, re, un and dis. We will continue working on fantasy and reality, and context clues.

Math- We will finish working in the chapter on two digit addition with and without regrouping and then moving on to subtraction with and without regrouping. These are very difficult chapters for many students. Remember you can always go to my website and connect to the Scott Foresman website and practice exactly what we are doing each day in class. It is a good review and also a great way to look ahead at the next lesson. I have heard that many parents are using the wonderful resource.

A few children are now on subtraction in Rocketship Math and many are near completion. All children should strive to be in subtraction by the end of the month. The program is designed to spend the first semester in addition and the second semester in subtraction. Now is a good time to evaluate where your child is in this program. They may need a little extra push to study those math facts. We will not begin multiplication in second grade. The second and third grade teachers wish to keep this a third grade only skill.

Science- We will complete the unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases this month. In January we will begin in our Social Studies book. There may be days that we float back into our Science curriculum for enjoyment without the need for a test!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break and that Santa finds your house on Christmas Eve! Take some time to rest, relax, and enjoy your wonderful children.
Mrs. Barth
