PHYSICAL SCIENCE UNIT E
Exploring Matter
Chapter One- Exploring Matter

Vocabulary Words

Matter-everything around you

Property-characteristic of matter

Mass-amount of matter in an object

Solid-all matter that has a shape of its own

Centimeter-unit used to measure length

Liquid-matter that does not have a shape of its own

Milliliter-unit used to measure the volume of a liquid

Gas-matter that always fills all the space inside a container

Chapter Review

1. Everything is matter. Solids, liquids, and gases are the three forms of matter.

2. Some properties of matter are color, size, and shape. Matter also takes up space and has mass.

3. All solids have a size and shape of their own that cannot change unless you do something such as cut, bend, or break it.

4. You can measure the length of a solid by using a centimeter ruler

5. A liquid takes up space and has mass. These are properties of a liquid.

6. You can measure a liquid's mass using a pan balance. You can also measure the volume of a liquid using milliliters.

7. A gas is matter that always fill all the space inside a container.

8. You can make a balance to measure gases by tying an unfilled balloon and a balloon filled with air to either end of a wooden rod.

UNIT E
Chapter Two- Changes in Matter

Vocabulary Words

Mixture-something made up of two or more things

Reversible-able to be changed back to the way it was before

Irreversible-not able to be changed back to the way it was before

Chapter Review

1. When you cut matter, its shape changes, but its mass stays the same. When you shape matter, its shape changes. It looks different, but its mass stays the same.

2. When pieces of matter are mixed together, each piece stays the same.

3. Water has three forms. There is liquid water; ice, a solid; and water vapor, a gas.

4. Taking away and adding heat causes water to change from one form to another.

5. Some changes in matter that are reversible include mixing, shaping, freezing, melting, and evaporating.

5. Some changes in matter that are irreversible include burning, cooking, and rusting.
