Dear Parents,
It seems like only last week I sat down to type the monthly news, and here it is November already. I would like to first take the opportunity to let you know how happy I was to have the opportunity to talk to each of you at conferences. Your kind words mean so much to me. That ten minute conference just flew by. I am fortunate to have concerned parents that have such a caring approach regarding education. You make my job a pleasure! Remember you can always stop in to see me in the mornings before school. I am usually at school by 6:45 each morning. If I have morning cafeteria duty you will see a sign on my door. Feel free to join me in the cafeteria for a chat. Please don't feel as though the only opportunity to conference is the formal yearly fall scheduled time. I truly enjoy talking to my parents.

Things are moving along very well in our classroom. The children seem to be enjoying our curriculum, especially the reading curriculum. They are simply on fire for AR. WOW! How do you say no to the child that wants to take their AR book outside for recess time? We will review the goals set by the children at mid-term and revise them as needed. I am just so pleased that the children want to read. Remember the old saying--the more you read the better you read.

Again, thank you for the time spent with me during conferences. I know your schedules are very busy. That shows your love and dedication to your child and our school.

Highlights For This Month's Curriculum Include:

Reading
Skills taught in this month include summarizing, multiple meaning words, making inferences, reading bar graphs, cause and effect, context clues, suffixes-less, ful, prefixes-re, un, dis, synonyms, consonant digraph-th, wh, ch, sh, long e, long u, action verbs, verb tense, subject and verb agreement, abbreviations, commas to separate words in a series and letter writing. Be sure to check your child's take home folder for grammar lessons to review. This seems to be a difficult subject for some students. Also remember that the reader will come home two times to read and review for the weekly assessment. The vocabulary words and comprehension of the story are always a part of that weekly assessment. Vocabulary words are highlighted in yellow within the story and are listed on the opening page of the story. Students should know what the word means. The weekly assessment also always has a question or two on the grammar skill covered during the week.

Math
We will be working in chapters devoted to mental math. With that said, "UGH!" I will be teaching the children this using a 100's chart and also to simply stack and add or stack and subtract.

Science
We will work in a unit on Physical Science. We will complete the unit on Pushes and Pulls. Remember you can now access the book on line directly from this website.

I hope you have a restful Thanksgiving break. Enjoy your time off with your children and don't eat too much turkey!

Final Thought:
"The important thing is not so much that every child be taught, as that every child should have the wish to learn."
