A haiku is a Japanese verse, written in three lines and employing highly evocative allusions. Below you will find the correct format for a haiku. Our second grade class will enjoy learning the art of writing a haiku this school year.

Line 1= 5 syllables
Line 2= 7 syllables
Line 3= 5 syllables



One lone hummingbird,
shivering. Searching
for a sign of spring.


Dinosaurs once ruled
the Earth as masters of all.
Today they are dust.


Bats sleep through the day
clinging to the roofs of caves.
They search food at night.
