Buzz words are those words that have been identified by teachers and researchers to be high frequency, high use words that students are held accountable for correctly spelling in all of their writing. Other classroom may have a different name for these words. I have heard them call Lightening Words, Sea Words, and many other names. Of course, in my classroom I am calling them Buzz Words for the theme of bees! When selecting the words for specific grade levels, developmental stages of spelling ability, and high use in everyday writing are taken into consideration. Buzz words are NOT words that are content specific, or specialty words. They are words that may seem very simple for the grade level, but have been found to be mispelled quite often when students are not held accountable for their correct spelling.
