Accelerated Reading Program

Our Accelerated Reading Program encourages all students to read...read, read! In my class, students begin Accelerated Reading in January. Children may check out a book from our class library or from the school library. The back of the AR book is labeled with a number that shows the reading level of the book. For example a 2.0 level would be a second grade book.

Accelerated Reading is an optional program on the second grade level. Children are encouraged to participate but certainly not forced to read from this group of books. Because students in our classroom are reading nightly for a period of twenty minutes, it is very easy for them to participate in the reading program and enjoy the rewards.

After students read an AR book they take a test on the computer. Some books have only five questions, others have ten. Tests can be taken in our classroom or on Friday in the computer lab. The tests are a very good check for reading comprehension. Points are earned for each test taken with a passing score. Points are accumulated throughout the grading period. Children can purchase small items from the AR store at the end of the grading period. Some items available in the store include candy, pencils, free dress passes, small toys, and much more!

Parents will find a summary report sent home with the students after completion of a test. This report will come home either in the daily take home folder or the Friday green folder.

Please keep in mind that scores are NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT part of AR. The goal is to get children motivated to read.
